Well folks, we have officially entered the 2015 Hurricane Season. The season, which forecasters suspect will be a quiet one, will last through the end of November.Even during relatively quiet seasons, very notable hurricane landfalls can happen. The worst thing that people who live along coastlines can do is not to prepare for tropical storms and hurricanes. The question is, are you and your family prepared should forecasters be wrong? Here is a list of helpful ideas to make sure you are prepared for a disaster:

  1. Check your insurance policies and coverage. Do you have flood insurance? Did you know that flood coverage is NOT included in your homeowners policy? If it can rain, it CAN flood. Don't leave you home at risk of not being covered in the event of flooding. If you are in need of Flood insurance, give us a call 386-698-2400.
  2. Prepare a Kit. Your kit should include: Food, water and clothing and of course...

    a. First aid kit

    b. Battery-powered or hand-crank radio

    c. Flashlight and batteries

    d. Whistle to signal for help

    e. Local maps

  3. Know your evacuation route. The main reason people have to evacuate during hurricanes is from a storm surge, which is an abnormal rise of water generated by a storm's winds that can reach heights well over 20 feet and can span hundreds of miles of coastlines, according to the National Hurricane Center. Be prepares and know your route.

  4. Make copies of your important documents. make copies of proof of ownership documents of any property not limited to their homes, cars and boats. These documents can be stored in the hurricane kit or in any safe location that does not risk being damaged during the hurricane.

  5. Protect your home. Use plywood to cover windows and extra security to keep doors from blowing open, in advance, to secure their homes from damaging winds. Make sure all outside items (such as chairs, tables, potted plants etc) are secure and put away so that they don't become potential flying debris.

  6. Back up your electronics and electronic files.

We here at Reiter Insurance are always here to help you with establishing a plan especially when it comes to your Insurance Coverage. If you have any question regarding your policy, please give us a call today. 386-698-2400
